When your loved one suffers from substance use disorder (SUD), you may feel helpless.

Often, families with loved ones who are struggling from SUD feel that they have tried all of their options to help their loved one. Families have attempted to control their loved one’s drug/alcohol consumption; talked with their loved one about their use, kicked them out of the house, let them back into the home in an effort to control their environment, previous detox/treatment attempts, rescued them from legal or other financial issues, drug screening, fractured family meetings, google searches, religious involvement, tough love and monitored their movements, just to name a few.

Ascension specializes in these difficult circumstances where all other efforts have failed and provides families with a proven pathway towards wellness for the entire family. It’s not unusual for physical, emotional and financial resources to have run dry. Even with persistent efforts, things are just not getting better.

It may be hard to come to terms with the idea that you alone can’t help your loved one, but our knowledgeable and experienced addiction professional staff can help you start the recovery conversation with a structured and controlled intervention. Keep reading to learn more about what an intervention is, how it is conducted, when it is needed and more.

WHAT IS AN ADDICTION INTERVENTION?

An addiction intervention is a carefully thought out plan that will enable you and your family to sit down and express concerns about your loved one who is affected by SUD. During this time, it is important that everyone has a well thought out letter directed by an intervention professional so that your loved one doesn’t feel attacked.

Our empathetic addiction interventionists use evidenced-based strategies to connect individuals struggling with SUD to an appropriate solution. We know the prescription for addiction is love and concern.

The goal of an intervention is only to encourage the person with addiction to go to treatment; it is to change the family dynamic. A history of attempts that are not working must be disrupted in order to break the addiction cycle. The aim is to address fears and manipulation by introducing healthy boundaries and trusted solutions that eliminate enabling behaviors.

Our 10-step approach to addiction intervention

** Because of our relationships with different treatment centers, we are able to provide quality recommendations about what center would be the best fit based on your financial needs. We also have the ability to negotiate with treatment centers to provide cost savings to you.

At Ascension, we believe an intervention is successful even if the person of concern does not enter treatment. We help the family feel that they have been heard and help them build healthy boundaries that allow them to heal and not further addictive behaviors. If the family follows Ascension’s prescription, many times their loved one will enter treatment just days later.

At Ascension, we have all the details worked out; finding care for pets, contacting the employer, working with the family’s insurance policy and arranging a bed at the treatment center. This ensures that when your loved one says they are ready to go, we can take them directly to treatment.

Understanding when an intervention is needed before it’s too late is important. First, as stated, family members must recognize there is a problem with their loved one and the family dynamics.

FINDING THE BEST ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTER

Addiction experts have connections to the best treatment providers across a broad spectrum of needs, often resulting in:
  • A smoother transition to and from treatment
  • Cost savings to families
  • Insurance relationships
  • Help with the pre-admission process
  • A better understanding of what to expect during the
          treatment process
If you are like many of the families that contact Ascension, you have inevitably searched the internet to find a treatment center for your loved one. The question becomes:
  • Which one is the most appropriate choice?
  • Can you trust the online reviews?
  • Can you get your loved one in if you lack insurance or your
insurance is out-of-network with that provider?

At Ascension Recovery Services, we do not attach ourselves to any particular treatment center. This allows us to find the best treatment options suited to the individual’s needs. Having many treatment options can allow family members and their loved one to feel comfortable and not second guess their decision to start the recovery process.

FAMILY ISSUES WHEN DEALING WITH ADDICTION

It is common that families may feel resentment, shame and guilt regarding their loved one’s illness. If the family relationship is in need of repair, it can be detrimental to their loved one to go through treatment, only to return to the environment where their family hasn’t worked through their own, separate, but related issues. This can result in a cyclical pattern of relapse for the loved one and their family.

When looking for treatment options, we want to make sure there is a family component that is parallel to the person of concern, but on a separate track. Having addiction professionals on your side, like our staff at Ascension, is important for several reasons. First, an addiction professional can diagnose family dysfunction that could become a barrier to long term success. Next, our interventionist can provide an unbiased examination of the problems your loved one is facing. Then, our interventions can ensure treatment center selection is based on the person of concern’s overall needs, insurance policy and financial tolerability of the family.

Having a professional involved that does not have the emotional attachment to the person of concern is always wise. These professionals have the perspective and experience necessary to guide a course of action that is in the best interest of the family unit rather than a plan tainted by a hastily made decision or emotion.

During your loved one’s treatment, questions can arise. A professional will be able to provide guidance through the treatment process and answer your questions to the best of their ability. When hiring an addiction professional, families allow themselves to heal along with their loved one.

Addiction is a complex issue that requires a thorough level of understanding in order to connect a suffering individual and family to the sophisticated services needed to address all the issues and circumstances that are present.

SUD AFTERCARE

The interventionist will conduct an intervention, provide treatment options and, unlike many other intervention companies, continue with services post-intervention. Our addiction professionals are with you, your family and your loved one every step of the way. After treatment, our professionals will also provide guidance on one of the most important recovery components; aftercare.

Aftercare can consist of additional levels of treatment including Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient (IOP), sober living facilities, joining mutual aid support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, individual therapy, understanding relapse signs and increased accountability through monitoring programs.

The person of concern may not be particularly looking for longer term treatment during these early stages of their recovery. Aftercare can either be an afterthought or an essential pathway toward success. Well trained addiction professionals understand the necessity of continuity of care and additional layers of accountability best suited for each unique case. This helps the person of concern to build a foundation in recovery that can last a lifetime. As part of the intervention process, our expert staff will help the family facilitate a conversation with their loved one about the importance of aftercare.

WHEN IS IT TIME TO HAVE AN INTERVENTION?

Unfortunately, addiction is a chronic, progressive disease. It’s not going anywhere, and it gets worse over time. By entrusting proven solutions, your loved one has a chance to get better.

If any of the following thoughts have ever occurred to you, it may be time for an addiction intervention for your loved one:

  • The chaos of addiction has spiraled out of control.
  • Constant concern and anxiety brought on by addiction is all consuming.
  • You are struggling to break through your loved one’s denial.
  • Family destruction from addiction has created angst and frustration.
  • You need solid advice and credible information about treatment options.
  • Your emotional connection to the situation makes it hard to be objective and reasonable.
  • You’ve had enough waiting for the problem to correct itself and have lost hope.

In the end, the expertise of an addiction professional can not only save you thousands of dollars by stopping the pattern of repeatedly sending their loved one to treatment but can provide the peace of mind and professional guidance that very well may save their lives
